One of the biggest things my clients, family and friends struggle with is SLEEP! I used to be the same way … thinking that 5 hours was the perfect amount of sleep for me. I still have restless nights on occasion and I can tell you I am GRUMPY when I don’t get at least 7 - 8 hours of sleep!
So many people go through their days like walking zombies ... sleep deprived, irritable and not able to think at full capacity.
Our society survives on coffee and energy drinks to help us stay awake, almost in an altered state of mind, so that we can bounce from activity to activity.
Most people are severely sleep deprived and have trained themselves to survive on a few hours of sleep. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke to name a few.
Years of sleep research has shown that the proper sleep duration, 7 to 8 hours for adults, leads to better health, more productivity, more profitability, less stress, higher life satisfaction and less stress! ! Sleep can help with everything including athletic performance, recovery, memory, behavior, anxiety, weight loss, sex drive and so much more.
So, I encourage you to create a nightly routine of unwinding at least an hour or two before you get in bed. Disconnect from your computer or phone. Take an Epsom Salt bath, read, stretch … just do something to help you unwind and quiet your mind. Make sure your room is completely dark and the temperature is around 68 degrees F (this is the optimal sleep temp)!
